Grand Cayman: The Cayman Islands, BWI are
located west of Jamaica. Grand Cayman is the largest of the
islands at about 22 miles long and 8 miles wide. The islands
were formed by a limestone ridge and thus offer poor topsoil for
growing plants. This is a benefit for scuba diving.
There is little top soil run off into the ocean from the rains
resulting in near perfect visibility all year round. The Caymans were discovered by Christopher Columbus on his last voyage in the early 1500's. He originally called them the "Tortugas" because of all the turtles that could be seen. They were later named the Caymans after the Spanish word for "crocodile". Today about 50,000 live on Grand Cayman where the primary industries are banking and tourism. With over 300 dive sites around the three islands Shawn and I will be returning time and time again to explore. |

Paradise Reef: This lovely reef located in only 50' of crystal clear water hosts a variety of fish, coral, and sponge. Dropping into the water we made our descent down the mooring line and then followed the reef westward out towards the wall. The easy 100' yard swim or so brought us to the edge of the reef to a shallow drop off where the wreck of the Ora Verde lie. |

Ora Verde: Was a steel ship that wrecked just off
the reef. Successive hurricanes and storms have battered the
wreck against the reef resulting in a broken hull strewn across the
sand. This shallow water wreck was a lot of fun! |

Bottom Line: This shallow water reef and wreck dive is a highly recommended novice dive that almost everyone will enjoy.
